Import contacts from a CSV
Upload people you already know from a CSV file, such as a LinkedIn connections export, tag the batch, and add them to a campaign's sequence.
Use an import for people you already have a relationship with: your LinkedIn connections, clients, or a list of people who asked to hear from you. Importing only adds contacts. It sends nothing.
Prepare the file
Section titled “Prepare the file”A CSV with a header row and one person per row. Column names are matched without regard to capitals, spaces or punctuation. Download a sample CSV, or use the Download a sample CSV link in the Import dialog.
| Column | Required | Accepted names |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | email, e-mail, email address |
|
| Name | No | name, full name, or first name and last name together |
| Tags | No | tags or tag. Separate several tags with semicolons, like investor; warm |
Other columns are ignored. A LinkedIn connections export (Settings, Data privacy, Get a copy of your data, Connections) works as it is, including the notes LinkedIn puts above the header. LinkedIn only includes an email for connections who allow it, so rows without one are skipped.
A file can hold up to 1,000 rows and be up to 2 MB. Save spreadsheets as CSV UTF-8.
Import
Section titled “Import”-
Open the ⋮ menu next to Add contact on the Contacts page, choose Import CSV, and pick the file.
-
Tag everyone in the file if you want to find this batch later, for example
Webinar September. This is optional. -
Confirm that these people know you, then click Import.
You land on the Contacts list filtered to the batch tag, with a note of how many contacts were added, how many already existed, and how many rows were skipped.
What happens to each row
Section titled “What happens to each row”- A new email becomes a new contact. Its Came in via reads
Imported · <file name>and its activity shows the import. - An email you already have keeps its name and history. Tags from the file and the batch tag are added. An import never removes a tag.
- The same email twice in one file becomes one contact with the tags of both rows.
- A row without a valid email is skipped.
- An unsubscribed address is imported, but can never be added to a sequence.
Imported contacts are not leads of any campaign, so publishing a sequence with Also enroll existing campaign leads does not pick them up.
Add them to a campaign
Section titled “Add them to a campaign”Open the campaign, click Add recipients, filter by the batch tag, and tick Select all. Up to 50 people a day join straight away and the rest are queued, 50 a day. See Add a tagged group to a campaign.
